Artha Impact – The Power of Networks

ARTHA (/ˈɑːrtə, -θə/; Hindi: अर्थ) is one of the four aims of human life in Indian philosophy. The word translates literally as “meaning, sense, goal, purpose or essence” depending on the context.

Investing for Impact

The Artha Impact team has been working since 2007 as the impact investing arm of Rianta Capital, which is a dedicated advisory to the Singh Family Trust. Through this initiative, we have been running a series of programs designed to invest, catalyze and convene around the promise of supporting meaningful business interventions for impact in India. Today we hold a robust portfolio of direct early/growth stage investments and a small handful of impact funds in the country. Our sectors of focus include (but have not been limited to) agriculture, healthcare and livelihoods.

Moving into 2020, we celebrate the consolidation of our efforts under the broad Artha Impact umbrella. We build networks and convene our peers through the platform we have developed – comprised of a combined diligence workflow tool, marketplace and social network – that creates a virtual space for visibility and more effective collaboration between investors and donors, support organizations and service providers. Through our affiliate company Artha Networks Inc., we support the visibility of peer platforms as they profile and aggregate high impact social businesses globally. Through our monthly physical convenings in cities around the world, we make sure the virtual is bolstered by the real.

We know that if we are going to solve for any SDG, the reduction of transaction costs and amplification of good solutions is key.

We are proud to have been able to contribute in a small way to the global discourse that is today redefining the purpose of capital, both through the many millions of lives that have been touched through our portfolio companies, and through our convening and collaboration work in the impact finance ecosystem.

Our sectors of interest

AGRICULTURE - कृषि

The development cornerstone of every emerging economy:

Over 70 per cent of Indian rural households depend on agriculture, which is a vitally important driver of the Indian economy contributing ~17% to total GDP and providing employment to over 60% of the population.   Artha has a special interest in this sector, where we began our work in 2007, primarily driven by the interests and origins of the Singh family whose trusts we advise.   Our interest lies not only in the optimization of the technologies, inputs and services that support small-hold farmers, but also in the disintermediation of supply chains where producers at the base of the pyramid are empowered.

HEALTH - स्वास्थ्य सेवा

The products and services at the intersection of life and death:

India has one of the world’s highest rates of out-of-pocket spending in healthcare, and the poorest segments of the population are left behind.  The World Bank estimates that 90% of all health needs can be met at the primary healthcare level.   Artha's investment thesis is founded on a belief that business solutions to last mile service, particularly for diagnostics (and therapeutics) is the way forward. The level of ground-breaking innovation not only with technology but in the business models unique to India is astounding, and we are privileged to be a part of this growth story with the entrepreneurs uncovered through our platform and partnerships.

LIVELIHOODS - आजीविका

An intrinsic driver for economic growth:

'Livelihood' is defined as the set of activities performed through one’s life span, involving the ability to secure water, food, medicine, shelter, clothing and the capacity to acquire such basic necessities working either as an individual or as a group such that households may be operated on a sustainable basis, with dignity. Investing in income-generating activities has been a priority area for Artha since inception, and has manifested in our investment portfolio in a number of ways including the employment of individuals from under-served communities, as well as the provision of services or products to such communities such that their ability to earn is materially enhanced.

About the Artha Platform

The Artha Platform, first released in 2008, is an online network comprised of a few key user profile types whose improved interaction we believe will increase and improve the flow of capital to social businesses in India. The network consists of a deal pipeline for enterprises to be listed upon, a dashboard for each user that enables signalling when investors are interested in looking at or acting upon a new opportunity, and a series of facilitated workflows that help make due diligence a little less painful and a little more efficient. The Platform user profile types are explained below.
